Our safety razor is a high quality twist to open (TTO) style razor, which means you don’t have to disassemble it to change a blade.  It’s sufficiently heavy to give you a good shave, and the blade exposure is mild, so it’s a very forgiving razor.

The Shave

Modern cartridge razors lift your whiskers up above the skin, and then cut them.  The whisker then falls back down, below the skin.  While that may feel really smooth when you’re shaving, a few minutes later it starts to itch, and you may develop bumps or even ingrown hairs.

The Blades

Safety razors use a double edge razor blade that hasn’t changed since it was invented in 1906.  Because they haven’t needed to.  DE razor blades are made of high quality steel, precision sharpened to give you a great shave.  Cartridge razors use the cheapest metal possible, and they’re not even sharpened, they’re just really thin.

Cartridge razors weren’t invented to give you a better shave, they were invented to make money for the razor companies.  Every few years a “new and improved” design comes out, and it just so happens the new design isn’t compatible with the old razor handle.  This generally happens just as the patent on the old cartridge design expires, so other companies can make cheaper replacement blades.

The Savings

A package of 4 cartridges for a Gillette Fusion razor currently costs $22.95.  This leads men to hang on to the old cartridge way longer than they should.  You can buy 100 double edge blades for $11.95.

Over the course of a year, if you change a blade just once a week, you’ll spend $300 on Gillette Fusion blades.  Even if you use a new blade every day with your double edge razor, you’ll spend just $40 during a year.  Most DE blades comfortably last 3 or 4 shaves.
